It has been nearly half a century since the end of the Space Race, but one of the brightest spots of the disaster known as the year 2020 has been the dramatic progress in the business of the final frontier. Escaping Earth is no longer the realm of large government projects. Technological advancements are launching private interests into orbit at increasingly lower costs.
A handful of private companies and startups are changing the way business views the heavens. Launch costs are plummeting as a myriad of reusable rocket technologies begins to send payloads and crews to orbit at scale helping…
As travel deprived Americans begin to plan for their next adventure, many are looking south of the border to Mexico for an escape. American tourists remain restricted from visiting most of the popular locations in Europe and Asia. Likewise, many feel safer traveling a little closer to home.

Okutone Snow Park is located to the north of central Minakami town in northern Gunma Prefecture. This ski hill originally opened in 1972 as Okutone Kokusai, but is known as Okutone Snow Park since 2007. It offers good intermediate courses and is relatively easy to access via trains and a free shuttle bus.
The resort is known for staying open even on the snowiest of days. Add the early morning and evening riding and it can be a great option for getting fresh pow when nowhere else in Minakami is open or accessible.

Sobatokoro Kadoya is a local favorite and a must try for visitors to Minakami. The soba noodle restaurant was founded in Nagaoka City in the Niigata Prefecture over 250 years ago before moving to its current location in Minakami in 1989. Kadoya maintains a strong commitment to the tradition of handmade buckwheat soba noodles that are rolled cyprus cutting boards and sliced with a custom knife to ensure the freshest flavor and texture. The soba is then boiled in the spring water coming from Mount Tanigawa to provide a clean hearty flavor.
The restaurant is conveniently located in heart of…

White Valley is mostly a beginner to intermediate mountain the easy access to ungroomed powder makes it a sneaky option when other local resorts are closed or with limited operations. The small resort first opened in 1962 and is located in the Tanigawa Onsen area of Minakami town in Gunma Prefecture.
The resort can easily be accessed by train and a free shuttle from Minakami station making it a great one-day trip from Tokyo or an easy winter getaway.
Great for skiers and snowboarders of all levels and ages. With only two lifts and a…
Minakami has been popular for onsen for centuries. Legend has it that the Japan’s great Shogun once visited these hot springs for their healing powers.
Yuterume Tanigawa Onsen is one of the best values and location for a soak, especially after a day in the snow at White Valley Ski Resort. Enjoy a large rotemburo (outside hot spring pool) with a view of the valley and the sound of the river. One of my favorites to take a dip after a day on the mountain.
The outdoor rotemburo sit along the riverside nestled at the edge of the forest. A…
In 1953 news spread quickly around the world that Edmond Hilary and Tenzing Norgay had accomplished the impossible — they had achieved the impossible. The two climbers had successfully reached the peak of Mt. Everest, the highest in the world, and lived to tell the tale.
Almost overnight the two men became celebrities, given the highest accolades from their countries, and entered into the history books.
However, Hilary and Norgay didn’t climb Everest alone.
Far from it.
“We shared the work, the risks and the success — it was a team effort and nothing else is important”
— Sir Edmond…
2020 has been a year marked by a global pandemic, widespread economic uncertainty, and violence erupting around the world. It can be easy to get lost in the chaos and fall into despair.
However, there is still positivity all around if we choose to see it.
